Intelligence Pulse

The week opens in a holding pattern. Wall Street futures were flat Monday, with investors watching Treasury yields climb and waiting on the Fed’s September meeting minutes, due Wednesday, October 7 (CNBC). Friday’s market rallied on a softer-than-expected jobs report — just 29,000 new positions in September, unemployment at 4.2% — because it eases pressure on the Fed to repeat the 25-basis-point hike it approved in mid-September, its first since 2023 (we covered this in Edition #0038).

Why it matters: ahead of Wednesday’s minutes, today’s ISM Services print is the first real read on how solid U.S. consumption remains outside manufacturing, on the road to the Fed’s October 27-28 meeting (Federal Reserve). This week’s practical takeaway isn’t to chase Friday’s rally or fear yield volatility — it’s to wait for Wednesday before making any big moves.

AI Frontier

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude model, is preparing for what could be the largest IPO in history: Reuters reported the marketing phase would launch in mid-October, aiming to complete the Nasdaq listing before November’s U.S. midterm elections (Reuters). The number drawing attention isn’t the date — it’s the figure: investors consulted by the Financial Times in August pointed to a target valuation of up to $2 trillion, double what was being floated earlier in the year (PYMNTS/Financial Times). Anthropic is also finalizing a $15 billion revolving credit facility before going public. Practical implication: if that number holds, it becomes the new yardstick against which every other AI valuation gets measured —including OpenAI’s own funding round, closed this year at $852 billion (Yahoo Finance)— before a single quarter of public results exists to back it up.

Signal vs. Noise

The noise: this week’s chatter in AI circles centers on whether Anthropic will list at $2 trillion and the $120 billion-plus Amazon, Nvidia, SoftBank and Microsoft have already committed to OpenAI —read as proof the AI market has no ceiling.

The signal: since August, investor Michael Burry has been showing the same diagram —Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia and AMD trading equity stakes and cross purchase commitments worth hundreds of billions of dollars— to ask an uncomfortable question: how much of that demand is real, and how much is simply the same money circling among ten names? (24/7 Wall St.). You don’t need to take a side to notice this week’s hard data point: the Fear & Greed Index closed at 43 —fear territory— while the indexes hover near record highs (AltIndex). That gap between sentiment and price is, right now, the clearest sign that AI optimism is narrower than the average headline suggests.

Quote of the Day

“You only find out who’s swimming naked when the tide goes out.”
—Warren Buffett, a line he repeated across several Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters.

With leverage and cross-financing piling up in the AI sector, this week’s question isn’t whether the tide goes out — it’s when.
