One million jobs. That’s what The Economist calculates artificial intelligence has created in the United States since mid-2023 — more than double the roughly 200,000 jobs attributed to it as destroyed over the same period (The Economist / Dealroom, Sept. 2026). The magazine’s headline puts it bluntly: “The jobs apocalypse is postponed. An AI jobs boom is here.” But if you live in Colombia, the number that should matter more to you is a different one: 10.33 million people already earn their living independently in the country — nearly tied with the 10.47 million salaried workers (DANE, via Cambio Colombia, Sept. 2026). The “jobs apocalypse” narrative was never just about the United States. And neither is the answer.
Intelligence Pulse
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on September 4th that the US economy added 162,000 jobs in August, with unemployment at 4.1% — lower than in nearly 90% of months over the past 50 years (AllSides, Sept. 2026). What makes this relevant to any decision you’re making today is where the growth concentrates: occupations closest to the AI boom — engineering, software development, mathematics, data science — added 730,000 jobs above trend since 2022 (The Economist). It’s not that AI isn’t displacing routine, administrative work — it is — it’s that the net is positive, and it rewards whoever knows how to operate the tool, not whoever ignores it. If your decision today is whether it’s worth the time to master AI applied to your trade, this is the data that answers it: the market is already paying for that bet.
AI Frontier
In Latin America the signal arrives earlier but points the same way: demand for AI skills in the region’s job postings rose from 0.6% in 2017-2022 to 2.6% in 2026, according to CAF, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. In parallel, the region’s AI freelance market is growing faster than formal tech hiring — a Colombian freelancer today can deliver, with the right tools, what a mid-sized European agency delivers, connected by nothing more than internet access and judgment (Freelancer.ar, 2026). The practical takeaway: the competitive gap is no longer closed by a diploma or a zip code — it’s closed by how fast you fold AI into your actual workflow.
Signal vs. Noise
The noise: The Economist itself ran a headline months earlier — “The labor apocalypse. Expect the best, prepare for the worst” — and today 7 in 10 Americans believe AI will make job hunting harder (Infobae/The Economist, Sept. 2026). That fear shows up on social media too: mentions of META, AMD, NVDA and INTC on r/wallstreetbets spiked this week (+2,093%, +1,204%, +446% and +825% respectively, per the AltIndex tracker) — pure retail enthusiasm around AI infrastructure, not a verified market fact. The signal: in Colombia, 6 out of every 10 new jobs created in 2026 are independent work, and between 2022 and 2026 self-employment grew faster (14%) than salaried employment (12.7%) (DANE). That’s not fear or social-media noise — it’s a structural reshuffling of the labor market that’s already happening, alarmist headline or not.
Quote of the Day
“Perhaps AI will eventually make many humans unemployable — but there is no sign of it yet.” — The Economist, September 2026
It’s not a promise that nothing will change. It’s a reminder that evidence outranks narrative — and today, in Washington and in Bogotá, the evidence points the same way.
What This Means If You Work for Yourself in Colombia
If you’re an independent professional, a freelancer, or building your own business, you’re not on the losing side of this transition — structurally, you’re on the side that’s growing the fastest. The question worth asking isn’t whether AI will replace your work, but whether you’re using the current window — while demand for AI skills still outpaces qualified supply — to make yourself impossible to substitute. That starts with knowing, in hard numbers, exactly where you stand financially today.
